I thought I'd give some info on El Paso, as I knew pretty much nothing about it until a few months ago. El Paso is about as far west as you can get in Texas. It is very far away from San Antonio (7.5 hours by car), Houston (10 hours), and Dallas (9 hours) and only 4 hours from Roswell, New Mexico. Right click for a bigger sized map.

Here are some things the internet has to say about El Paso...
El Paso, Texas - a place where two countries (US and Mexico) and three states (Texas, New Mexico, and Chihuahua, Mexico) meet to create North America's largest border community.
El Paso is located at the western tip of Texas, so it lies within the range of the Chihuahuan desert, which covers much of Chihuahua and Coahuila in Mexico, and some parts of New Mexico as well. As a result, rainfall is scarce here, and the city enjoys over 200 days of full sunshine a year. The climate is also very dry, with less than 9in (23cm) of rain a year, most of which occurs during the summer. Between July and September, winds from the Gulf of Mexico blow into El Paso, carrying moisture and causing flash thunderstorms.
Temperature averages vary widely during the year, as the city is landlocked and the weather is not moderated by nearby bodies of water. Highs in the summer often go above 100°F (38°C), though nights are usually much cooler (about 70°F or 21°C). During the winter, daytime temperatures usually remain in the 50s (10-15°C) even in January, but nights can dip below freezing.

Ali - just wanted you to know - here's a travel advisory right across the border from you - take care - Love Mom from White Rock
OTTAWA — The federal government wants Canadians to take note of the deteriorating safety situation in certain parts of Mexico.
The Foreign Affairs Department has updated its travel report on Mexico.
It recommends that Canadians take particular care when travelling to areas in northern Mexico, especially around the border with the United States.
Cities such as Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez are the epicentres of the of bloody drug wars between Mexico’s main cartels.
The Mexican government tripled its military presence in Ciudad Juarez this week.
Foreign Affairs warns that firefights between soldiers and drug cartels can occur at any time, and travellers can get caught in the crossfire.
The U.S. State Department recently issued a travel alert for Mexico, and has instructed its diplomats in Mexico not to travel to certain areas unless absolutely necessary.
Ali,
Good to hear from you. El Paso sounds like an interesting place but like Suzette I have been seeing some articles about the border area. Take care. I imagine you are so busy that you won't be doing much sightseeing. Andy and Molly should be there soon. Love Stew
Yeah, Juarez is not a good place to be right now, apparently there have been many kidnappings too. But the good news is that El Paso is much, much, much safer!
