International Day of the Midwife

Wednesday was international day of the midwife. The clients helped me celebrate my first year as a midwife by having 3 night births 3 nights in a row! There was a 4th night birth the next night, but thankfully I was finally off call! The good news is that we only have 2 May births left and it is only the 7th.

There was a shindig at Mount Royal University, who hope to have their midwifery program up and running next September. Sadly I missed it due to birth number 3. The husband of a midwife was given an award for supporting his wife for so many years before midwifery was even legal and for supporting the midwifery cause after she passed away. This poem was part of the presentation.

Home Front Covered

Three a.m. phone calls, kids lunches,
schedules changed, office called.
Two worlds balancing.

Generosity and cooperation,
available and present.
Inner softness, outer strength.

Life lessons at the kitchen table.

Blizzard.
Stranded, make tea; wait.
on call, on guard.

Give, compute, check, print… donate.
Darkness, late night work.

Carry birthing kit to car,
A kiss
Be safe
The home front covered.

Thanks Andy, I couldn't do it without you! And thanks to my parents for all the 4pm pickups of Molly. I'm so lucky to have so much help to be able to have my dream job.

Ali - what an accomplishment - it must be exiting to think the College will have their program running so soon

Enjoy every moment as I'm sure each birth is a little miracle in the making

Love you lots, Suzette
