Sometimes plunging boldly means getting into more trouble than if you'd taken a bit more time to think things over. The other evening Molly was playing with a quarter and ended up swallowing it. Luckily it never affected her breathing, but she was clearly having some difficulties, so we headed off to the hospital.
We spent about an hour in the waiting room, went for an xray, and then spoke with the doctor. By the time we saw the doctor, the coin had settled in a better place, Molly was able to swallow again and was a bit peppier. The doctor was thinking that the coin may already be in her stomach, but from the xrays it was quite obvious that it was not! It was still quite high in her esophagus.
Then we had to wait for a GI doctor to come see us. It going to be quite easy to get the quarter out as it was up so high, but it was still going to require general anesthetic and a scope. We had to wait until day surgery opened the next morning, and they would take it out somewhere between 8am and 3:30!
They put in an iv (that took 3 tries and was definitely the worst part of our trip), got us a bed, and Molly and I settled down for the night in a shared room. I felt bad for the other girl and mom in the room as Molly woke up numerous times during the night.
The next morning I was quite excited to find out that they were going to get us in at 8am! She went in at 7:59 and by 8:20 the surgeon was telling us how well everything had gone.
While the coin was in, Molly was subdued and not too impressed when anyone wanted to touch her. As soon as she was awake from the surgery she was back to normal, eating popsicles, making friends with the nurse, and feisty as ever!

We've had a few discussions about appropriate objects to put in our mouth, and told her she only gets one ER trip per year. Hopefully we're good for awhile now!

what a relief that must have been when all was over. It must have been a terrible feeling - glad it's all over.
Remember Molly, limit of one trip a year!!!
I'm glad it all went well
Love Memere
Poor little Molly. I am so glad the quarter was easy to remove and that she is her bubbly happy self again. In my day we couldn't afford to swallow anything larger than a cent and that was allowed to take it's course through the
"rear" exit which sometimes took days so there is something to be said for inflation.
love to all G.G.
Oh poor girl, and poor Mom. I never worried much about Katie, but Liam on the other hand, if we don't end up in the ER with something swallowed before he's 2 I'll be surprised! Glad she is back to herself now:)
Wow,
No trip to the Emergency Ward is much fun for Molly or her parents. Glad to see all is well and I hope you can limit your visits to one a year. Grampa Stew
Wow! My little adventurous Molly! Glad she is doing well and hope you are both okay after such a busy few days! Loads of Love - the Stagers.
