Molly definitely slowed down my yard plans, but thankfully my parents came over on the May long weekend to help us dig the new flowerbed. This needed to be done before the garden could be planted as we had piled 2 feet of topsoil into the garden area last fall in anticipation of the new flowerbed. The next week the garden was planted. I was not expecting too much as it was June by the time the seeds went in. We decided to start small and easy with lettuce and carrots (and chives!). And just at the point when I was going to start using the lettuce, one of the neighborhood rabbits ate it down to the ground. I was very down on the neighborhood wildlife for a while. But Johnny and I put up a small fence which seems to have kept rabbits and squirrels out.
Here is the yard on 20 July. Left click to see the rabbit eaten lettuce.
Here are the lettuce and carrots today!
Chives with errant basil
Suzette brought a couple of tomato plants with her when she came in July. I have never grown tomatoes before, so didn't think we'd actually get any as they are challenging to grow in Calgary. You can see them in the first picture above looking quite small.
18 August, looking good!
Today they are starting to slowly turn red! Watering is not my forte, so the tomatoes are a bit misshapen. I'll try to work on that for next year!
