first health scare

Last night Molly woke up about a half hour after falling asleep. She had fallen asleep on her side, so I rubbed her back. She settled quickly and I left, at which point she started screaming. Andy came in and tried to get her back to sleep, but she continued to scream so I decided to feed her again. When I picked her up the left side of her upper body seemed a bit floppy. As I was feeding her I started playing with her left arm. I'd pull it up, and when I let go it would just fall back down with no resistance. I called Andy back and put her down on her bed. She had stopped screaming, but wasn't moving her left arm at all. Andy undressed her to see if he could see anything wrong with her arm, and I called my parents to see if we should take her to the hospital (old habits die hard!).

Her arm looked normal. Talking to my mom, I was trying to talk myself out of going to the hospital until Andy tried to give Molly a toy. She is always very happy to grab a toy with both hands so she can get it to her mouth asap. But she would only grab the toy with her right hand. Her left arm didn't move at all. I decided that was it, we were headed to the hospital. I hung up the phone, and Andy started dressing her again, at which point, she started moving her left arm! Just a little bit at first, but within 30 seconds she was back to her old self! Hooray! We think that when she fell asleep on her side, her arm fell asleep and once I moved her and the pins and needles were all gone, she just didn't know that she could move her arm again.

I'm amazed at how worried we were and how quickly we came up with problems like a bug bite, stroke, and neurological damage. I think I have a bit better idea now at how heart wrenching parenting will be. I guess I owe an apology to my parents for all the stress I put them through!
